YOUR DESERT FIELD GUIDE

A better day begins with a clear plan.

Merzouga is a base for the Erg Chebbi dunes and the surrounding villages. Use this guide to choose the pace of your visit, decide what to combine and prepare the details that matter.

Choose the pace that suits you

If you want an active start, ask about a guided quad or buggy ride. A safety briefing comes first; the route and driving requirements depend on the operator, conditions and your experience. Sandboarding can be a separate short activity or an add-on when the timing and route allow.

For a quieter visit, consider a guided walk or camel ride around sunrise or sunset. Walking on soft sand takes more effort than it appears, so tell us if anyone in your group prefers a shorter route or a vehicle transfer.

A 4×4 outing is a way to see more of the area around the dunes without planning every stop yourself. It can include viewpoints and, when arranged, local visits. The exact route is agreed before departure.

What a 4×4 route can include

Khamlia is known for its Gnawa musical tradition. Ask whether a visit or performance is possible on your chosen day and whether a contribution is expected. The Mifis area offers a different landscape and a chance to learn about its mining history.

On a longer outing you may ask about the oasis near Hassi Labied, the 4×4 car museum or Rissani. Opening hours and travel time can affect the order of stops. Dayet Srij is seasonal and may be dry; wildlife sightings cannot be promised.

A visit to a local family should be arranged respectfully in advance, not treated as a guaranteed or unannounced stop. Let us know which places interest you most, and we will propose a practical route.

One day, or an overnight stay?

With a few hours, choose one main activity and leave time for the meeting point, briefing, photographs and return. Trying to fit a long 4×4 route, dune ride and sunset into a short window can feel rushed.

With a full day, you can pair a daytime cultural outing with a later dune activity, subject to travel time and availability. If you are staying overnight, discuss camp transfers, dinner, breakfast and the return journey separately so you know exactly what is included.

What to bring

Take drinking water, sun protection, sunglasses and closed shoes. A scarf helps when it is windy or sandy. Bring an extra layer for cooler mornings and evenings, and protect cameras and phones from sand.

Tell us in advance about mobility needs, children, food allergies or other requirements. We can explain which activities may be suitable and what can be arranged, but the final route and inclusions must be confirmed for your date.
